Here are 5 steps describing how one business skill moved me from my 9-to-5 job to being a CEO — and how you can do it too.
If you’re like me, you allow stories to inspire you rather than spend hours, days, or even months reading self-help books. Allow me to share my story on my five easy (and detailed) steps on how to become a CEO in less than 30 days.
I live and breathe the 5-second rule created by Mel Robbins. One of the most sought after coaches in the world. She says:
If there is any area of your life that you wish to improve, use the 5 Second Rule.
If you need more confidence, use the 5 Second Rule.
If you need motivation, use the 5 Second Rule.
If you are sick of doubting yourself, use the 5 Second Rule.
Are you wondering how this gained me the title of CEO? Let me share with you steps I took that changed my life forever…. In less than 30 days.
Step One – Scratch the Itch
All good stories start somewhere. For me, I made two career changes before mine began. In my first career, I was making six figures, yet somehow I was unhappy. I worked in a male-dominated industry with seemingly no chance of working my way up in the “good old boys club.” During this time, I also lost my mom to heart disease which threw me into a depression. I had isolated myself from my friends and family.
After a few months, living in an empty house feeling alone and miserable, I picked myself up and made a move to the not-for-profit industry. I thought this is where I would find true fulfillment! However, it wasn’t enough for me. I wanted to touch more lives!
Here’s what I knew for sure:
1. I wanted to impact lives
2. I wanted to do something that already made me happy (in my case, something with lingerie)
Step Two – Network
In this small window of becoming a CEO, you need to network. Be sure to include people you may already know, as well as industry leaders who inspire you. You’ll be amazed at how generous people are with their time and how much they are willing to help if you reach out to them.
For example, I saw a Facebook post from a woman promoting a seminar on starting your own business. Intrigued, I reached out via FB messenger. As we were chatting, she mentioned she and her team were going to be in a city that was only an hour flight from me. From that single conversation, she invited me to join her for dinner to discuss how to bring my vision to life. It was an opportunity I couldn’t refuse! I seized the moment and jumped on a plane to meet her!
Surrounding yourself with reliable mentors is essential. Being choosy is okay. To put it another way – if you want to soar with the eagles, you can’t hang with the turkeys. Got it?
Step Three – Make Your Vision a Reality
Visualize the person you want to become. Sarah Centrella, a visionary coach, works wonders with her clients making #Futureboards. Visualization allows you to connect with the person you want to be. My dream was big, and if I’m honest, every step I’m in creates a bigger vision. Small thinkers have small businesses or sometimes no business at all.
Step Four – Stop Overthinking
This is the most critical step in my process. You have five seconds to make your decision before your mind will start to tell you why you shouldn’t do something. At this point, I had visualized my business model, and now I had to execute it.
Step Five – Keep Doing
Don’t stop the momentum! Before this period in my life I had never posted a video of myself and barely had a history of posting selfies. However, to start mingling with the professionals or potential clients, I needed to get my face out there. It’s intimidating at first, but this simple 5 Second Rule has launched me into the job of my dreams.
With these simple five steps, anything can be possible! Are you ready to become a CEO? You have 5 seconds to make your decision!
